Table of Contents
At the epicenter of a drug & alcohol addiction is the person struggling with the disease. Around them is the ring of loved ones, the next may be co-workers, bosses, teachers, coaches, then communities, then nations, reaching to the ends of the earth. Its vastness is why trying to figure out how to find the right rehab center can seem overwhelming. Take a deep breath and consider these factors to help make the best choice.
Resident Population
The other residents in the facility can be as important to the addict’s recovery as the treatment itself in rehab centers. Aspects to consider are:
- Age-specific (children, adolescent, adult, seniors)
- Co-ed or Single Gender
- LGBTQ+
- Physical or mental disabilities
- Veteran/Military Spouse
- Religious beliefs
Types of Treatment
Some rehab centers are strictly medically-based, others have a more spiritual component. Holistic treatment programs that encompass both tend to be the most effective. You may want to ask if there is co-occurring disorder treatment to address issues beyond the addiction.
Adaptability of Treatment
Each recovery program is as different as each recovering addict. Make sure the provider does not use a rigid cookie-cutter program for its rehab center patients.
Treatment Teammates
Find out who will be involved in the process beyond program staff to ensure you are comfortable with what your role will be. Inclusion is incredible if you are ready for it, but it can be detrimental if you are not.
Staff Information
The qualifications and accreditation of all staff, from admissions to discharge and beyond, are important, but you will also want to know what the staff to patient ratio is. A low ratio may result in your loved one not getting the attention they need when they need it.
Access to Information
When researching how to find the right rehab center, it is important to keep in mind that good rehab centers are open to answering all of your questions and providing information about their programs, including things like their success rate.
Location
For some, this may be the most important, and trickiest, factor in choosing a rehab center. Should the facility be:
- Close to family and friends for support, or at a distance to be removed from triggering situations?
- An urban setting or a rural setting?
- Modern or rustic?
