Trauma plays an important role in how we live our lives, and research shows that traumatic experiences during childhood can increase the likelihood that an individual will struggle with substance abuse later in life.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing therapy (EMDR) is a nontraditional therapeutic method designed to reframe the mind to mitigate the effects of dwelling on past trauma. Rather than attempting to make sense of trauma, EMDR focuses more on the negative feelings that arise when memories of those traumatic incidences cross our minds. Negative thoughts and feelings that are no longer useful are replaced with positive thoughts and feelings that will encourage healthier behavior and social interactions.
In using EMDR therapy to support addiction recovery, the knowledgeable staff here at Summit Malibu evaluate each resident’s emotional responses through a trauma-informed lens. Though working through trauma can be a challenging journey, we are here to support you as you heal from past experiences and establish a happy, healthy life free from addiction.
