Why is Dual Diagnosis Treatment Necessary?

Overcoming drug or alcohol addiction by itself can be difficult for anyone. Recovery from addiction combined with a mental health condition such as depression or PTSD becomes even more complicated because both issues must be treated together at the same time.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), approximately half of all people with a substance use disorder of addiction will also experience some form of mental health disorder in their lifetime.

Treating addiction without identifying and targeting the accompanying mental illness often results in problems with recovery. For the same reasons, treating only a mental health disorder without addressing addiction will also result in a very poor outcome.

Dual diagnosis treatment is necessary to diagnose and treat both addiction and mental illness together by isolating the root causes of each condition and finding the most appropriate ways of healing each of them simultaneously.

Sometimes it can be challenging to understand if addiction came first, or if a mental health issue such as depression caused a person to drink or use drugs as a way of coping with being depressed.

One part of dual diagnosis treatment is discovering the root causes of the problems and another part is finding the best treatment methods that will be effective for each person.

What Are Common Co-Occurring Disorders?

Regarding dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorders, any combination of substance use addiction and mental illness is possible, and there are literally too many to list.

Below we outline some of the substances and mental health disorders that are commonly experienced together.

Addictive substances that can co-occur with mental illness include:

  • Alcohol
  • Cocaine
  • Prescription Medications
  • Benzodiazepines (Valium, Xanax)
  • Opioids (Vicodin, Oxycodone)
  • Heroin
  • Methamphetamine
  • Marijuana

Any of these substances can be used as a coping mechanism to deal with the pain and symptoms of a mental illness. For example, alcohol may be used to ease stress or depression, and it may work for a short term.

Over time, drinking to feel better takes a toll on the body and brain. At some point as it stops working as intended, a person can become addicted and develop an alcohol use disorder. When that happens, the individual has two issues to recover from – a dual diagnosis of alcohol addiction and depression.

Alcohol is probably the easiest substance to purchase and the most socially accepted, although any drug can be addictive and cause a person to require dual diagnosis treatment.

Mental health conditions that co-occur with addictive substances:

These are only some of the mental health conditions affecting teens and adults. Genetics and environmental issues can cause many of them, but for some people, substance use addiction often makes them much worse. It can also directly cause issues such as depression, stress, anxiety, and others.

It’s not uncommon for a person to begin casually drinking socially, and then it becomes a daily habit where he or she can’t function without it.

Daily drinking over a long period of time changes the function and structure of the brain to the point where an individual relies on alcohol to get through each day and to feel normal. They need a drink just to cope with reality, and without it they become depressed. Now they have both an alcohol addiction and depression to overcome.

There are many paths to a co-occurring disorder of addiction and mental health, and each person’s path will be different. The safest and most effective way back to a healthy life is with a dual diagnosis treatment program.

Common Dual Diagnosis Symptoms

Do You Need Dual Diagnosis Treatment?

Created by people in recovery for people in recovery. We understand where you are now and how you can recover for lasting change.

Typical Symptoms of Dual Diagnosis or Co-Occurring Disorders

Recognizing the symptoms of a co-occurring disorder can be challenging because they usually don’t appear all at once like an acute injury that has a distinct cause.

Most of the time, addiction and a mental illness can take time to develop, so the symptoms often evolve gradually as the disease progresses.

Because addiction is so complex, each person will exhibit different signs unique to their condition. Still, there are some typical signals to watch for, either in yourself or a person you care about.

Do All Addiction Rehab Facilities Offer Dual Diagnosis Treatment Programs?

This is a good question, and an important one to ask when considering help for addiction and mental health disorders.

Many treatment centers will say they offer dual diagnosis treatment, when in fact, they don’t have staff with credentials in both addiction AND mental illness, which is vitally important.

The outstanding Treatment Team at Summit Malibu has the experience and qualifications to effectively treat addiction and mental health conditions together.

We have medical doctors on staff who are board-certified in addiction and psychiatry to recognize and heal all aspects of co-occurring disorders.

In addition, we have Master’s level clinicians who work in tandem with all of our therapists to provide exceptional levels of care for all of our residents.
