One essential component in successfully treating substance abuse is ensuring that an addict has a strong support system of people rooting for their sobriety. Our addiction group therapy sessions allow residents to process their issues together, share their collective experiences, and support one another through the process of recovery. Residents at Summit Malibu attend three dynamic group therapy sessions for drug addiction daily, though the focus of each group therapy session is hand-picked to provide residents with the tools necessary for them to continue their commitment to recovery upon completion of their stay with us.

In addition to group processing, our program also implements Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) in our group therapy for drug addiction, which helps residents understand the thoughts and feelings that influence their behaviors. Our techniques allow residents to better evaluate a stressful situation, so they can objectively process what is occurring rather than letting their emotions control their decisions.

Dialectical Behavioral Treatment (DBT)–which is a subset of traditional cognitive behavioral therapy–has an educational focus that touches less on the past and more on the present. DBT emphasizes healthy coping mechanisms and learning to navigate life’s daily stressors successfully. The focus of DBT is largely on education, and the program itself is divided into four modules designed to change behavior effectively—these four modules include mindfulness, distress tolerance, interpersonal effectiveness, and emotion regulation.

Aside from treating addiction, CBT and DBT are often used to treat a wide range of mental health disorders. Regardless of whether a resident has a dual diagnosis, the broad application of CBT and DBT skills make them extremely beneficial therapy tactics for all Summit Malibu residents.
