Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a therapy designed to help people change patterns of behavior that are not helpful. It assumes that people are doing the best they can but are influenced by positive or negative reinforcement that interfere with their ability to function appropriately and are lacking the skills to cope with their environment. DBT is based on the modalities of Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance, Emotion Regulation, and Interpersonal Effectiveness, providing numerous tools that enable an individual to change their thinking and function appropriately in their surroundings.
