Recovery is all about change: habits, lifestyles, and even hobbies and activities. It may be necessary to make a complete break from things you once did. If sitting around a campfire drinking beer with your buddies is what you once did, then a weekend camping trip is probably not a good idea.
But that doesn’t mean you can’t have fun—you will just find yourself enjoying a different, sober kind of fun. There are so many fun sober activities you can choose from, you won’t have to feel like you’re missing out. Here are just a few to start with.
1. Organized Sports
Look for a rec league of basketball at your local community center or Y, join a softball league, or find a foursome to golf with every week. You’ll reap the benefits of camaraderie and physical activity.
2. Sightseeing
Another fun sober activity: Make a list of tourist attractions in your hometown or state that you haven’t seen or haven’t seen in a while, and try to visit one each week.
3. Crafting Clubs
Is there something you’ve always wanted to learn how to do or make? Perhaps it’s knitting, weaving, or woodworking; whatever it is, there’s a good possibility there’s a group for it in your area, and almost assuredly an online community, too.
4. Music
Not only is learning music a great brain exercise, it’s also a marvelous way to express yourself. So take up a tuba, grab a guitar, and start marching to your own tune.
5. Volunteer
You have so much to offer, so contribute to your community by volunteering. Like animals? Work with an animal shelter or foster organization. Love to read? Tutor a student or read to the elderly.
